Burlap Bookcover

Here is a burlap bookcover I made this weekend for an A5 notebook. I quite like how it turned out. It is for sale now in my Etsy shop.

The SAQA Oceania Studio Blog Hop has kicked off today, with Mel Forrest here in Brisbane being the first one to show her studio. Sue Dennis is next on May 3rd, followed by Lisa Walton on May 5th and yours truly on May 7th. After that there will be eleven more artists showing their studio this month - you can find the full list on Lisa's blog, and I will give directions when it is my turn next week. I'm looking forward to seeing all these creative places and hope you will follow us!

Speaking about creative spaces - tomorrow is my day off and I am planning a big screen printing session. I have just prepared my silk screen with a new hand cut stencil and as soon as I have dropped the boys off at school tomorrow morning I plan to get going. Hope to show you the results soon!

Small things

It's too hot and more importantly too humid to do any serious sewing or quilting - especially in a sewing room without airconditioning :-(. But I did make this cover for a mini notebook (A7 or 8 x 11.5 cm), from the leftover bits of the Kindle cover fabric. Since I have far more notebooks than I need, I have put it up for sale in my MadeIt store.
(by the way, I absolutely love the Kindle - I am reading Under the Dome now, by Stephen King, and it is so much easier to carry the Kindle around than the 1000+ pages book!)



I haven't shown you this postcard that I made a while ago for the birthday list at the Fibermail group. It has arrived now, so here it is. I still love selvedges :-).

Silk Journal Cover

Remember the silk paper I made a while ago? I used it to make a cover for an A5 Visual Art Diary.

The shop is doing very nicely :-) and the fact that Thea wrote an enthousiastic posting about my Dutch Houses card has certainly helped. Thanks Thea!



A while ago I was aked to design a Boy and Girl Calligram design. That led to this fabric, which is now for sale on Spoonflower. I loved doing this commission!



Also for sale is this Tree fabric, based on a photo of a frangipani tree I took a while ago and posted on my daily photo blog. I have ordered a FQ myself to make a bag out of it.




And finally, there are some more new calligram fabrics for sale - not just the ones shown here, but also a Lobster, Moose, Narwhal, Penguin, Swan, Turtle... My calligram alphabet is almost complete! (but I don't think the quilt will be finished in time for Robbie's birthday in September...) You can find them all on my Spoonflower page.

The quilt for Australia Wide 2 is finished and submitted. I'll let you know the outcome. I'm still thinking about the quilt for the Creative Arts Spectacular event...

Selvedge bookcover

With the selvedge strips from my birthday FQs I made a cover for my diary for next year:

I really enjoy making things from selvedge strips. Did you know there is a blog dedicated to these things? Check out the awesome projects shown there!
(can some native English speaker explain to me the difference, if any, between selvedge and selvage? Thanks!)
So if you have any selvedge/selvage strips hanging around and you're not using them... ;-)



PS After posting this I left a comment at Karen Griska's Selvage Blog, telling her about my selvedge projects (I had sent her an email twice after making the selvedge bag, but they never arrived) and she immediately dedicated a blog posting to me! Gee - I'm chuffed! :-)) Thanks Karen!

Bookcover and art & craft display

With some leftover strips from the TATW quilt I made this bookcover, for a small sketchbook:



I free-motion quilted a flower on it, maybe I'll use a purple Paintstick on it as well (have to order one first though!).

And look at this!



At my workplace there are a lot of very creative people - quilters, painters, papercrafters etc. Very often someone brings something handmade that we all admire. So we thought it would be a good idea to have a 'show and tell' where everyone can bring his or her creative products. Carmel made this poster, using some pics from this blog - how flattering!

Ta-da!



It's finished and I'm really happy with it.
I used a thin cotton batting and a beautiful batik for the backing. I thought of meandering, but finally decided to quilt it with a variegated thread just following the grid of the weaving. And I finished the edges simply with a satin stitch, the same way I do the edges of the ATCs. I think it looks very good.



With the leftover bit I made a simple pencil case:



And now to fill my artist's sketchbook with useful drawings... ;-)

I decided not to make a bookcover from the other one, as I used a bit of leftover batting that was rather thick. I will instead make a bag out of it! I am now cutting the namepieces out of the FQs in my stash, to make the backside ;-).



And I finished the 2 postcards:



They are ready to be traded, and I have lots of ideas for some more postcards - just waiting for people to trade them with!

Work in progress

Inspired by Caity's sketchbook (which she showed me at the 2QAQ meeting the other day) I decided to purchase an A4 sketchbook and make a cover for it. Again I am using the fabric-weaving technique; I have made 3 sets of ATCs this way but am not finished with it yet! I really wanted to make a bigger piece using this technique and this seemed a good project.



For the ATCs I have used Fast-2-Fuse, but here some fusible web product I had in my collection (don't remember what it's called or what I used it for). Now I need a thin wadding and a backing fabric, so I'll have to go shopping, how annoying! ;-)

That will have to wait until next week though, as we are going camping tomorrow until Sunday, in Kilkivan in the South Burnett region.

By the way, I guess if I wanted to enter this quilt-to-be in a quilt show, I shouldn't show pictures of it here, not even at this stage? Or is it not possible to enter it once it's finished because of the pics ont his blog??...

And today, I received mail from the USA - the ATCs from the Quiltuniversity class swap!

And last but not least, I have signed up for a quilting retreat at the end of May! A whole weekend to sew, sew and sew some more! Heaven! :-)
