New calligrams!

It's been on my to-do list for a very long time: draw some new calligrams. And finally I did, and had them made into thermofax screens. They arrived this afternoon, just when I had to go and pick up the kids :-(. When their homework was done and they were playing on the Wii I couldn't resist making a few quick prints. I'm very happy with the seahorse and the platypus, that fascinating Australian animal!



The mouse was a request from a friend. I love his tail ;-).

All these designs are also available on Spoonflower, for printing on fabric, wallpaper or as a wall decal. There is also a Shark Calligram design, that I haven't had made into a thermofax screen (yet):

New thermofax screens

As I told you yesterday, I had some new thermofax screens made. Remember this picture? It's a photo of a transformer station I made in Adelaide last year (I showed it on the blog here). I made a black and a white print and like how they look together... To be continued!

New prints

Yesterday (my once-in-a-fortnight day off) I did some screen printing. The print above is the start of a new quilt - I wonder if anyone recognizes the design? The background fabric is a Lisa Walton handdyed fabric.

I will work on the new quilt this weekend, as I am going on a quilt retreat with my Dutch friend Rens. Yay! I also hope to finally finish the Alphabet Calligram Quilt for Robbie and make a start on the quilt for the Beneath the Southern Sky exhibition.



I tried something new yesterday: printing my thermofax screens on paper. The Robot Calligrams turned out very well - I'm thinking this could become a bunting.

New thermofax screens

Yesterday I received three new thermofax screens from Linda Stokes - I had my Dolphin and Walrus Calligrams made into screens:



And also the Zebra design. I printed it in white ink on black fabric, like I did with the original design...



... and got a sleeping zebra! Hahaha. Using black ink on white fabric it looks better:



What about a pink zebra?



Since I was screen printing anyway I made some Kookaburra and Robot prints as well:

I have also added some Dutch Houses ATCs (ACEOs) to the shop, so if you've always wanted one but do not make ATCs yourself here is your chance!

More prints

The stretched print I showed in the last post sold within two days! So I have made some more stretched prints, of St Basil's and the Dutch Houses, and more cards, and added them to my Blue Jacaranda store.



Yesterday my gymnast son (8) had his first competition of the year. He did very well and provided me with lots of inspiration for new quilts and prints!

Screen printing

In a stolen hour I managed to do some screen printing. Sally made my St Basil's drawing into a thermofax screen and here is the first print! Isn't it lovely? (the St Basil's fabric is for sale now at Spoonflower, in black and red)



I also did another gymnast, and printed some more Dutch Houses to make postcards for Blue Jacaranda (they all sold after being mentioned in the MadeIt newsletter - I've added some new ones now).



I just love white on black!

Thermofax screen, postcards and ATCs

After our very busy weekend I finally found time to do some screen printing - yes, more gymnasts! Sally in Hobart, Tasmania, made this thermofax screen for me (thanks again, Sally!):



She has set up a Thermofax Shop and will burn your images for you. I am sure I will make use of her services again!



In the last week I have received four cards from the Dutch Fibermailers. This gorgeous Mother and Child card is from Hannie.

And here are three birthday cards, from Ellen, Evelyn and Olga:

New Thermofax screens

This week my thermofax screens arrived from the USA (Lyric Kinard makes them). So I had a delightful evening playing with them. The Doors print looks great, I think.



I had my Houses of Amsterdam design made into a small screen, to make ATCs. And I also ordered a small screen of this delightful penny-farthing picture (from this free clip-art site) to use in my bicycle quilt.

Experimenting

I am experimenting with stencils and Shiva paintstiks. Great fun!

Postcard

As was to be expected, I made a postcard out of the screen printed fabric, and sent it to Lyric Kinard to thank her for introducing me to screen printing ;-).
I am making some more - one is for Marloes, but the others aren't spoken for yet, so if you would like to swap a postcard, let me know.

There are some other projects going on at the moment - the first is a new selvedge bag. Down Under Quilts have asked to include the selvedge bag I made last year as a project in their December issue. Although I still love that bag, there are a few things I would do differently now, so I decided to make a new one. It makes writing the instructions easier as well.

And the other project is a new quilt... At this stage I don't want to put any photos on the blog, but here are a few hints: it involves raw edge applique and a lot of free motion quilting, and the observant reader of this blog may guess what it is! So far it is coming along nicely, although at the moment I am a bit stuck... I will leave it for a few days to work on the selvedge bag and then look at it again. It needs to be finished before September 11th, for I want to enter it in the Queensland Quilt Show.

Thermofax printing

Yesterday I got the thermofax screens I ordered from Lyric, so of course I played with them for hours! I am really pleased with the Houses of Amsterdam screen. I saw something like it here and asked Marion if she made the screen herself. She did not answer (I guess she's away, it's the summer holidays now in the Netherlands), so I decided to try and design one myself. Using a photo of some houses in Amsterdam, I made this drawing and send it to Lyric to have it made into a thermofax screen. And hasn't it turned out beautifully!



I ordered a medium and a large screen. The medium image will be great for making postcards.
Here I tried to make a row of houses:
